URGENT: Protect SNAP-Ed & FoodRight Programming

SNAP‑Ed—the Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Grant Program—was cut from the “One Big Beautiful Bill” and faces full defunding on October 1, 2025 if not restored through the FY 2026 appropriations process.

Why This Matters:

All funding stops October 1 with no transition plan, leading to job losses and leaving low-income communities without vital nutrition education. SNAP-Ed is the foundation of FoodRight’s work—bringing hands-on nutrition education to thousands of Milwaukee students. Cutting this program now, with no transition plan, is unacceptable.

At FoodRight, SNAP-Ed funds 75% of our programming. Without it, we cannot teach thousands of Milwaukee students and families to cook and enjoy healthy, affordable meals. Our evidence-based programs help children build lifelong habits that reduce obesity, diet-related illness, and long-term healthcare dependence.

But SNAP-Ed’s impact extends well beyond Milwaukee. Across the country, SNAP-Ed equips families with practical skills to eat better, move more, and live healthier lives.

Despite its impact, some legislators claim SNAP-Ed is duplicative. That’s false. No other federal program provides this kind of nationwide nutrition education.

The bottom line—SNAP-Ed is smart public health policy. It empowers people to take responsibility for their own health and stretch their food dollars, reducing costs to our healthcare system and reliance on safety nets.

Hello, I’m [Name] from [City, State].

I’m calling to ask you to restore funding for the Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Grant Program (SNAP‑Ed) in the FY 2026 Agriculture Appropriations bill.

I’m personally connected to SNAP‑Ed because [e.g., “my children participate in SNAP‑Ed at school,” or “I’ve worked as a SNAP‑Ed educator for years”].

Since its launch in the 1970s, SNAP-Ed has had strong bipartisan support because it is proven to work. For every $1 invested, it can save up to $10 in future healthcare costs—making it a smart, cost-effective public health investment. Eliminating this program would harm public health, lead to job loss, and hurt low-income families.

I am asking that you please ensure that SNAP-Ed remains fully funded in the FY 2026 Agriculture Appropriations bill.

Urge Congress to restore SNAP-Ed through appropriations.

Thank you.

📧Subject: Restore SNAP‑Ed Funding in FY 2026 Appropriations

Dear [Member of Congress],

I’m writing to strongly urge you to support full funding for the Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Grant Program (SNAP‑Ed) in the FY  2026 Agriculture Appropriations bill.

SNAP‑Ed was eliminated in the recently passed Farm Bill, with all funding set to end on October 1, 2025. Without it, our communities will lose access to the only federally funded program that provides practical, evidence-based nutrition education. Educators will lose their jobs, and families will lose critical support for making healthy, budget-conscious food choices.

I’m personally connected to SNAP‑Ed because [insert personal connection].
(Tell your story and describe the impact it has had on you, your family, students, or community.)

Since it was launched in the 1970s, SNAP-Ed has enjoyed decades of bipartisan support because it works. It’s one of the most cost-effective tools we have to support long-term health outcomes. In fact, for every $1 invested in SNAP-Ed, we save up to $10 in future healthcare costs.

SNAP-Ed aligns directly with the goals of Make America Healthy Again—empowering individuals and families to take responsibility for their health while reducing reliance on public health systems.

Both Chambers must act to fully restore SNAP-Ed funding.

Please ensure that SNAP-Ed remains fully funded in the FY 2026 Agriculture Appropriations bill.

Thank you for your service and leadership.

Sincerely,

Other Harmful Cuts in the "One Big Beautiful Bill"

FoodRight’s concerns go beyond SNAP-Ed. The House’s budget reconciliation bill includes more than $290 billion in cuts and restrictions to SNAP and related safety net programs—undermining essential supports for low-income families. These proposals would harm the very communities we serve and contradict efforts to Make America Healthy Again.

  • CEP (Community Eligibility Provision): CEP allows high-poverty schools and districts —like Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS)—to offer breakfast and lunch at no charge to students. The House bill would lead to fewer districts qualifying for CEP, reducing student access to healthy, free school meals and increasing administrative burden.

  • SNAP cuts: The bill proposes stricter eligibility requirements, increased work reporting mandates, and reduced benefits—disproportionately affecting children, who make up over 41% of SNAP recipients, as well as older adults and people with disabilities.

  • Medicaid restrictions: Proposed changes would reduce federal funding and tighten eligibility, making it harder for vulnerable populations to access care, including families, seniors, and children.
