URGENT: Protect SNAP-Ed & FoodRight Programming

The U.S. House passed the "One Big Beautiful Bill" on May 22, 2025, which would eliminate the SNAP-Ed program (National Education and Obesity Prevention Grant Program)—a trusted, efficient, and empowering nutrition education initiative serving families in all 50 states.

Eliminating SNAP-Ed Would Be Devastating

At FoodRight, SNAP-Ed funds 75% of our programming. Without it, we could not teach thousands of Milwaukee students and families to cook and enjoy healthy, affordable meals. Our evidence-based programs help children build lifelong habits that reduce obesity, diet-related illness, and long-term healthcare dependence.

But SNAP-Ed’s impact extends well beyond Milwaukee. Across the country, SNAP-Ed equips families with practical skills to eat better, move more, and live healthier lives.

Despite its impact, some legislators claim SNAP-Ed is duplicative. That’s false. No other federal program provides this kind of nationwide nutrition education.

The Bottom line—SNAP-Ed is smart public health policy. It empowers people to take responsibility for their own health and stretch their food dollars, reducing costs to our healthcare system and reliance on safety nets.

I’m calling to urge Senator [Name] to protect SNAP-Ed in the final Farm Bill. This USDA program helps families [like mine] learn how to eat healthier and stretch their food dollars.

SNAP-Ed is active in our schools, stores, and communities. It works—and it changes lives.

Cutting SNAP-Ed would harm families, children, seniors, and others across our state. If we’re serious about Making America Healthy Again, we must protect this program.

📧Subject: Please Oppose the Elimination of SNAP-ED

Dear Senator [Name],

I’m writing to urge you to oppose any proposal that eliminates Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed). This cost-effective USDA program delivers life-changing nutrition education to low-income families across the country.

SNAP-Ed directly supports the goals of Make America Healthy Again—empowering people to take responsibility for their health while reducing long-term reliance on public programs.

SNAP-Ed works:

  • 40% of participants eat more fruits and vegetables and drink fewer sugary beverages

  • 35% increase their physical activity

  • It costs just $5.15 per person annually—only 0.4% of the total SNAP budget

  • Every $1 invested can save up to $10.64 in future healthcare costs

[Insert your personal testimony here. Share how you, your family, students, or community have benefited from SNAP-Ed. Lawmakers value real stories.]

Eliminating SNAP-Ed would harm children, seniors, working families, and people with disabilities across our state and the nation. Please protect this vital program in any final Farm Bill or budget legislation.

Thank you for your service and leadership.

Other Harmful Cuts in the "One Big Beautiful Bill"

FoodRight’s concerns go beyond SNAP-Ed. The House’s budget reconciliation bill includes more than $290 billion in cuts and restrictions to SNAP and related safety net programs—undermining essential supports for low-income families. These proposals would harm the very communities we serve and contradict efforts to Make America Healthy Again.

  • CEP (Community Eligibility Provision): CEP allows high-poverty schools and districts —like Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS)—to offer breakfast and lunch at no charge to students. The House bill would lead to fewer districts qualifying for CEP, reducing student access to healthy, free school meals and increasing administrative burden.

  • SNAP cuts: The bill proposes stricter eligibility requirements, increased work reporting mandates, and reduced benefits—disproportionately affecting children, who make up over 41% of SNAP recipients, as well as older adults and people with disabilities.

  • Medicaid restrictions: Proposed changes would reduce federal funding and tighten eligibility, making it harder for vulnerable populations to access care, including families, seniors, and children.
